Hiw to Zoom in to Edit Gopro Videos

As you probably know, GoPro camera doesn't have a zoom feature. But there is a way how to deal with that later, during post processing. This tutorial will show you how to zoom your video clip in GoPro Studio. You'll learn how to move your image vertically and horizontally or how to rotate it. We also show how to do these effects dynamically, within one video shot, using a more advanced technique (keyframing).

These features are especially helpful when your objects are too far or unintentionally move away from you. Like kids, they always run off my shots 🙂

Set Higher Resolution

At first, important note before you start filming. As a result of zooming during video editing process, you will lose the quality of your video. So if you captured your video in 1080p resolution, it will not be 1080p after zooming anymore. If you assume that filmed objects could be far away from you, set your camera to a higher resolution like 2.7k or even 4k. Just remember that you need to keep your frames per second value at least at 24 or above.

Getting to the Step 2

At first, complete Step 1 in GoPro Studio – import your raw video clip(s), view them, trim out unwanted parts and then convert them.

Then proceed to the Step 2. Drag video clips one by one to the timeline (I used just one file in my video tutorial).

Zoom, Rotate and Move Horizontally or Vertically

Click on the desired clip in the timeline.

Find FRAMING CONTROLS on the right side of GoPro Studio and here all adjustments will happen.

First, move with the slider ZOOM or adjust more precisely by using arrows behind the slider. This allows to zoom in or zoom out your video.

Similarly, you can use all other sliders below – for horizontal and vertical adjustments, and for rotating the image to any desired angle.

There are also another two sliders which weren't used in the video tutorial. Use H.ZOOM slider when mixing 4×3 and 16×9 video sources to adjust the horizontal scaling of the image. H.DYNAMIC slider serves for adjusting the horizontal stretch point of the image. This control is best used in tandem with the H.ZOOM control and helps preserve the normal look of people if they have been stretched by 4×3 to 16×9 conversion.

If you need, at any point, return back to default values, there is a button for it.

Now you know how to set zoom for the entire video clip.

Dynamic Zoom within One Video Clip

But what if you need to zoom in or out dynamically within one video scene? You can use a feature called KEYFRAMES.

At first, move within your video clip and find a place where you want to change the level of zoom (or move or rotate). Drag the yellow line over the clip to the desired position.

Then add a new keyframe by plus button.

You can set all the values as you did before – zoom, move or rotate as needed.

Then you can repeat all the steps with another keyframe. Find another position where you need to change zoom level, add a new keyframe and set new values.

In my video tutorial, I show my daughter walking with my husband on the snow for the first time in her life ever. They were too far away at first.

You can see that I added the first keyframe right at the start of the video – this one has default values set. Then in the next keyframe, I zoomed in to get closer to them. Next keyframe was a breaking point where I wanted to start zooming out as they came closer to me. I kept the same values because I wanted previous part of the video at the constant level of the zoom. At next keyframe, I actually set zoom out and horizontal adjustment.

By setting different values at various points (keyframes) of one clip, you will reach a dynamic change of zooming between the two frames. Would you recognize any difference between this zoom and real zoom on camera? I didn't. Just losing the quality if you shoot in 1080p or lower resolution.
